These villages length an area of 400 km. Hanan Ali, Raja Mobeen and Ali Asghir said Educational backwardness of youth is a serious, extremely sorrowful and disappointing whose average literacy rate is far less than the national rate of literacy. They were of the view that education is a vital for progress and prosperity of any nation. Strong educational infrastructure, being the backbone for development, helps in boosting economy, scientific and technological advancement and promotion of social sector.

The educational backwardness was due to the traditional neglecting attitudes of the governments, politicians, and the other high ups of the area.

More then 35 Higher Secondary Schools & 350 High Schools working in above area. Residents demanded to President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari to announce university in anywhere in Khitha-e-Kohsar.

It is relevant to note here the students of the area have to travel to Islamabad, Rawalpindi for higher studies which is too expensive for them and ultimately they have no option but to give up their studies.

Twenty-four-year old Hanan Ali Abbasi began his journalistic career at the age of 17, and covered National Assembly proceedings, political developments, general elections and the judicial movement. He also worked as a freelance Urdu columnist for many national daily newspapers and wrote a book, Zameeni sitaray. Abbasi visited the UK with the youth parliamentarian delegation, and has also been the state guest of the Chinese government. He became the youngest journalist ever to be awarded the ‘Pak-UK excellence award’ and was honoured with the ‘National youth award’ as well. Currently, Abbasi is the chairman of the Youth Senate Pakistan.

You started your journalistic endeavors at a very young age. What was it that attracted you to this field”?

There were many reasons, but primarily it was the importance of the media for public representation. I became a journalist because I wanted to understand the story behind every story. I may not be able to change the world, but at least I can contribute at some level. During my college life I studied biographies in order to better understand how journalists achieved their successful careers. My interest and passion with words and storytelling helped me. I knew that as a journalist I could work in various fields—foreign affairs, politics, sport, news, literature, etc.

What is the role of the media in present-day Pakistan?

The responsibility of Pakistani media is far greater than any other media source in the world. Pakistan needs a big change and the media can become an agent of change, especially because it is easily accessible to the public. Media should take care of national interest, culture and tolerance. The effort should be focused on supporting the national image rather than highlighting the harmful and depressing news.

What is the importance and the functions of the Youth Senate?

Youth Senate Pakistan is a mock legislative council. It’s a politically independent and leading youth forum for future leaders as a mock senate, aspiring to promote leadership and new community-based developmental concepts. YSP provides an ideal environment to the youth of Pakistan that enable them to understand the functioning of national legislative bodies, political campaigns, media strategies, action programmes, and other public welfare tasks. Led by former youth parliamentarian and national achievers, YSP aims at involving youth in meaningful experiences. Our 15 youth ambassadors from different countries, 35 youth senators and 500 district members are working together to encourage young people to play their part in the leadership process. The Youth Senate will play its vital role in producing young leaders with energetic and revolutionary spirit. You wrote a book, Zameeni sitaray, that has been distributed by the government in schools in the Abottabad and Mansehra districts.

What is the content of the book?

Zameeni sitaray (Stars on Earth) is a group of short biographies of 50 living luminous personalities who are regarded as commanding individuals in different walks of life. It is a combination of inspiring and missionary stories, shaped and compiled in a 200-page book. Each story represents exceptional struggle of prominent personalities, how they began their journey of life, faced harsh impenetrability but were successful. What would you consider as your most important achievement? All my achievements are equally valued, but if asked, then my greatest achievement would be the success of Youth Senate, where hundreds of talented Pakistanis are united for a brighter tomorrow.

Myra Imran
Islamabad

Meant to encourage talented Pakistani youth for their extraordinary performance at national level, the National Youth Awards 2010 became a source of immense disappointment for the nominees as the Ministry of Youth Affairs (MoYA) failed to organise the ceremony before its was transferred to provinces.

Along with other four ministries, the Ministry of Youth Affairs has been transferred to provinces under 18th Amendment. The National Youth Award, held annually on the occasion of International Youth Day on July 12, were the third biggest activity of once MoYA. This years again, the procedure for nominations started as per schedule. Big advertisements were given in electronic and print media encouraging youth to apply.

According to ministry sources, around 4,000 nominations were received. Among them, 41 were announced winners by the jury and they were informed through official letters, which they received on August 6. “My family and I were very happy. On August 9, the ministry officials called to take the address and contact numbers of my parents so that they can become part of the ceremony,” said one of the nominees on condition of anonymity.

The Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA) hall was booked and media was called but on the evening of August 11, just one day before the ceremony, the event was cancelled saying that the award ceremony had been postponed due to flood situation. “It was quite disappointing. The ministry officials said that nominees will soon receive new date for the event but it never happened,” said the nominee. The nominees kept contacting the ministry.

“Every time, they said that event will be held next week,” said another nominee Hanan Abbasi who is also the Chairman Youth Senate Pakistan. He said that a delegation of nominees met Federal Minister for Youth Affairs Shahid Hussain Bhutto on November 20, in which the minister ensured that award ceremony will be held in any condition. “But on December 9, they took the decision to shift awards to provinces,” he said. “It was only a matter of holding an event.” He said that there is a big difference between award given at national level and award presented at provincial level. “Now we do not know when and where the award ceremony will be held,” he said.

Referring to recently held Human Rights Awards, he said that all kinds of awards took place in past four months other than National Youth Awards. “It goes to show where the youth is ranked on the priority list of the government.” Asking another genuine question, he said that who is going to present awards to those who belong to Islamabad and FATA. “May be for ministry officials, the awards ceremony was nothing more than a bureaucratic procedure but for us and our families, it was the most precious moment of our lives that we missed because of the lethargic attitude of the Youth Ministry.” Hannan said that he and his friends plan to go to Supreme Court for help. “How can provinces present the National Awards?” he asked another logical question.

A previous official when contacted said that the ministry was all prepared to organize awards since July 11. “The shields were prepared, cheques of Rs50,000 were issued for each candidate and even the pane flex banner to be displayed on the stage was prepared.”

Talking to ‘The News’, former Senior Joint Secretary for MoYA Shahid Barlas said that they have dispatched shields, certificates and the cheques to the provincial governments on December 9. “The nominees will not be deprived of the award,” he assured. “The only difference is that the provincial department will present the award.” He said that they have paid Rs20,000 only for the dispatches.
